Dear Friend,
When I meet with Texans across our district, one of the top concerns discussed is healthcare. This is an issue I’ve dedicated a lot of time to because I care deeply about Americans’ healthcare needs and reducing the costs of prescription drugs. That’s why I want to share some of the work I’ve done on healthcare during my time in congress and invite you to my Third Annual Healthcare Innovation Summit.
During the 116th Congress, I helped introduce the Lower Costs, More Cures Act, which would have encouraged innovation, promoted making cures more affordable, and stopped pharmaceutical companies from engaging in unfair, uncompetitive behavior by limiting annual Medicare out-of-pocket costs at $3,100, requiring that insurance companies make drug price information available at doctors' offices so patients can know the price before the prescription is written, reducing abuses of the patent system, and establishing a negotiator in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative to advocate for U.S. consumers in trade agreements covering prescription drugs.
Additionally, 2020's end-of-year omnibus spending package helped end the practice of surprise medical billing. Healthcare providers will now have to work with insurers to settle on a fair price, rather than charging the patient. I was proud to cast my vote for this bill to help end surprise medical billing, which will have a positive impact on healthcare costs for so many Americans.
Finally, I want to make sure I extend you an invitation to my Third Annual Healthcare Innovation Summit. This Summit will bring together some of the most brilliant and forward-thinking healthcare leaders in Texas and across the country to discuss cutting edge research, new breakthroughs in medical technology, and the latest in healthcare innovation. You can find out more about the summit at the Eventbrite page HERE.
Special guests at this year's Summit include Dr. Stephen Hahn: former FDA Commissioner, Dr. Glenn Davis: Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder of Hamilton Health Box, Mr. Daniel Powell: CEO of Spark Biomedical, Dr. Lisa Forbes: Medical Director for Texas Children's Center for Immunobiology, and Dr. Rick Doblin: Founder and Executive Director of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies.
I hope you can make it to the summit, and I will make sure to continue working diligently to achieve policy solutions to the healthcare issues you care about.
