Parents Deserve Relief Funds From Schools That Don’t Reopen

Dear Friend,

Last week, I sent Leader McConnell a letter with three requests: Congress should not appropriate additional education relief money until states spend the 99% that remains from the previous package; all unspent money should be used to incentivize reopening schools to provide a minimum of 50 percent in-classroom capacity; and should schools choose not to do so and remain online, their outstanding funds should be distributed directly to parents and families.  From the letter:

"A U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) report published in June found that by the end of May, states had utilized less than one percent of the education specific money appropriated to them under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (CARES)."

"Directing funds not utilized for in-classroom education to Education Savings Accounts (ESA) will provide families the opportunity to choose the next-best educational option that fits their needs. It is crucial we provide alternatives to families in the event their school does not offer a sufficient in-person option."

"Every family should have the freedom and opportunity to pursue educational and developmental excellence for their children."
