Dates and Deadlines
Tax filing opens today, January 24, 2022 and ends on April 18, 2022.
You should have received, or be receiving shortly, the necessary documents from your employer to file your 2021 taxes. Before starting your tax return, collect all of the necessary documents needed for an accurate return. .
- In addition to collecting W-2s, Form 1099s and other income-related statements, it is important for you to have your Advance Child Tax Credit and Economic Impact Payment information on hand when filing (if applicable).
Child Tax Credit Payments or Economic Impact Payments
If you received advance Child Tax Credit payments or Economic Impact Payments in 2021, they will need the amounts of these payments when preparing your tax return. The IRS is mailing special letters to recipients that you should have or have received. You can also check the amount you received on IRS.gov.
If you were eligible but did not receive your third Economic Impact Payment or Advance Child Tax Credits this year, you should be able to claim the remaining amounts when filing your 2021 taxes. For more information about the Recovery Rebate Credit or the Child Tax Credit, please review the 2021 Form 1040 Instructions or visit IRS.gov.
File Electronically and with Direct Deposit
The IRS strongly encourages filing electronically to avoid paper return backlogs and delays. For taxpayers who earned $73,000 or less in 2021, the IRS Free File program may be a helpful filing resource. This program is a public-private partnership between the IRS and tax preparation software providers that allows eligible taxpayers to utilize these products for free.
