Dear Friend,

With committee work underway and legislation moving forward, I wanted to check in and provide a brief update on some of the happenings at the U.S. Capitol. Speaking on the House Floor

I gave my first speech on the floor of the House of Representatives this week, speaking out against the so-called “Equality Act.”

If this bill becomes law, it will mean government-imposed limits on the free exercise of religious liberty, businesses forced to cover the costs of abortions, and medical providers required to perform abortions – even if it conflicts with their deeply held beliefs. As a Minnesotan, as an American, as a woman of faith, and as a mother and grandmother, the issue of life is personal to me. Every life is precious, from conception until natural death.

Northwest Angle

For almost a year, the border between the United States and Canada has been closed. That presents a major problem for the residents of Minnesota’s Northwest Angle, which is only accessible by road through Manitoba.

Angle residents took action, plowing a 22-mile ice road across the frozen lake in hopes of attracting visitors and tourists back to the area. But that is a temporary, inconvenient solution – and when the ice thaws in the spring, the Angle will be cut off again until the border is re-opened.

I wrote a letter to President Biden urging his Administration to work with the Canadian government on a bilateral solution to re-open the border to non-essential travel. I am hopeful the Administration will take action to give these Minnesotans their livelihoods back.

Visit to Thief River Falls

Despite facing unprecedented challenges due to the pandemic, Minnesotans have remained resilient – something I witnessed firsthand during my recent visit to Thief River Falls.

I saw the hard work and innovation that is powering companies like Arctic Cat. With demand stronger than ever, Arctic Cat is looking to expand its production in Thief River Falls, adding good-paying jobs and reaffirming its commitment to the area and the industry.

In addition, I saw the remarkable innovation from Digi-Key, another invaluable part of the city, region, and state. I saw the commitment to the community’s history on display at the renovated Carnegie Library, learned about the needs of the local airport, and heard the concerns of local officials. I will be back soon!

President Biden Should Uphold His "Unity" Pledge

With a call for “unity,” President Joe Biden assumed the presidency pledging to bring Americans of all political backgrounds together. But just days into his presidency, Biden signed dozens of executive orders that fulfilled campaign promises to his farthest-left supporters and abandoned American workers.

Coming up in Congress

Here's a preview of what else is coming up this week:

  • On Thursday, we are expected to vote on H.R. 5, the so-called "Equality Act." I will also participate in the Judiciary Committee's Subcommittee on Antitrust, Commercial, and Administrative Law's hearing on online competition and the Agriculture Committee's hearing on "Climate Change and the U.S. Agriculture and Forestry Sectors."

  • The Democrats are also bringing forward their massive $1.9 trillion “COVID-19 Relief” spending bill later in the week. That bill includes everything on their long, liberal wish list but only allocates 9% of the spending towards actual public health efforts.
