Dear Friend,

This week, the House Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party had our first hearing. As a member of this new committee, I was eager to get to work with my colleagues to hold the CCP accountable, and the testimony we heard from the witnesses was truly harrowing. We've clearly got a lot of work to do to, but I believe the Committee is up to the task.

I also introduced legislation this week to ensure that Taiwan, our most crucial strategic partner to counter the CCP threat, has the tools it needs to defend itself and deter CCP aggression.

I also had some questions at this week's Ways and Means Committee hearing about massive theft of taxpayer dollars, and I was very pleased to announce the CA-45 Non-Profit of the Month.

Get the details about all of this and more below, and make sure to follow my Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to get these updates in real-time.

The Threat from the CCP is Personal

WATCH: The threat from the CCP is personal

This week, the Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) held our first hearing, and we're hitting the ground running to hold the CCP accountable for their human rights abuses, unfair trade practices, and violation of American sovereignty.

My own parents fled communism to find freedom. For me, the threat from the Chinese Communist Party is personal. As proud first-generation American, and a member of the Committee on the CCP, I am committed to finding ways to protect our national security and safeguard global stability from the CCP.

Standing with Taiwan

Image

There is no doubt that the CCP is the greatest threat to global stability and America’s national security. As they continue to threaten Taiwan and openly challenge the United States, it is more important than ever that we take immediate and decisive action to deter further aggression against our allies.

That’s why Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-CA) and I introduced the Taiwan Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act, which authorizes the President to lend or lease defense supplies to the Government of Taiwan, in the case of preemptive aggression by the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

This legislation will send an unmistakable message to the CCP that the United States stands with our allies and is prepared to arm Taiwan with the tools it needs to defend itself from a CCP attack. The time to put an end to a CCP invasion is before it begins. That is why I am calling on every single one of my colleagues – on both sides of the aisle – to support this urgent and crucial bipartisan legislation.

Get Your Education, Serve Our Nation

Image

For students considering their next steps after high school, the Military Service Academies present an exciting opportunity to receive a world-class education and unmatched leadership skills, paid for by the U.S. Military. The honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation.

Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA); the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA); and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.

To request a Military Academy Nomination from my office, please complete the form on my website, and someone my office will be in touch with additional information. In the mean time, visit my website to learn more about the application process.

WATCH: The Greatest Theft of Taxpayer Dollars

The Ways and Means Committee held a hearing on unchecked unemployment fraud. Taxpayers are on the hook for as much as $400 billion in fraudulent unemployment insurance payments - over $30 billion dollars of that was in California alone. We’re committed to getting answers for American taxpayers and ensuring this kind of fraud never happens again.

"The reality is that the project has never been realistic. Fifteen years after it was put before voters, there’s still no path to completion. Costs keep rising, and now ridership projections for the system, if it ever opens, are declining sharply."
