Dear neighbor,

I’m sharing an overview of all that we accomplished in the month of April.

To start, I began this month by celebrating my birthday on April 1st surrounded by my loved ones and neighbors in the district. It was a day of reflection and serenity before preparing for a month full of hard work and dedication to deliver to all of NY-16. Let’s get right into it.

ImageLast month, I stood with Vice President Kamala Harris as she announced $500 million for the Biden-Harris Action Plan for Building Better School Infrastructure to begin upgrading our schools, bringing us closer to a Green New Deal for Public Schools which I introduced last year. Every kid deserves a nourishing place to learn that is healthy for students and the environment by being carbon zero. The Biden Administration’s announcement is a great step towards that vision.

This month I also teamed up with Bernie Sanders and introduced the Ending Corporate Greed Act. The bill would tax corporations that raise prices more than is economically necessary putting an end to corporate profiteering. We need to make sure billionaires and corporations don’t continue to get richer while the average person struggles to afford gas, food, and utility costs. That’s why I also introduced the Babies Over Billionaires Act to make sure billionaires pay their fair share in taxes which would provide more funding for the next generation.

ImageIn Congress, Speaker Nancy Pelosi selected me to join the America COMPETES Act Conference Committee along with other House and Senate members. The bill is a historic opportunity for us to scale up the support for research, and STEM education pipelines, and invest in the brilliance of our youth. As Chairman of the Subcommittee on Energy for the House Science-Space-Technology Committee, I made several contributions to the final House-passed bill that I am very proud of — provisions that strengthen STEM equity at the K-12 level and promote worker ownership in technology. I will make sure to keep the people’s priorities on the table.

In D.C. I was also honored to chair my first in-person hearing for the Subcommittee on Energy in the Science, Space and Technology Committee. During the hearing, we examined why we need to act fast on climate change needs. To watch the full hearing click here.

Putting an end to gun violence and making our communities safe for everyone is a top priority of mine and the common sense gun reforms we’ve passed in the House are stalled in the Senate. That’s why I sent President Biden a letter outlining several executive actions he could take immediately to reduce gun violence. A few weeks later, I was proud to attend his announcement of  an executive action to begin regulating untraceable ghost guns by requiring sellers and resellers to place serial numbers on the home-assembled weapons. This new action fulfilled one of the steps I had outlined. We must keep fighting to end gun trafficking to protect our streets and ensure the safety of our youth, who far too often fall victim to gun violence.

ImageThis past month I was thrilled to announce and celebrate more than $5.4 million in federal funding I secured for ten Community Project Funding requests in our NY-16 community.  I was able to join some of those programs in person this month to formally announce that funding! Senator Chuck Schumer and I also joined neighbors in Co-op City to celebrate HUD refinancing their loan making way for $142 million to be used for essential capital repairs and improvements.  I also hosted an IRS Tax Event in partnership with the IRS regional office, NY Taxpayer Advocate, and AARP where we answered tax questions and provided tax preparation and resources. Neighbors also joined me for coffee at the New Rochelle Library, I met and played bingo with seniors at the Mamaroneck Senior Center, and visited Rye High School and Mount Vernon  High School to speak with students about their experiences. It’s always a pleasure to connect with you all in person and hear your priorities firsthand and for me to get an opportunity to share how I’m working to deliver on those priorities. I hope you were able to join my legislative team and I for our town hall and were able to get an answer to all your questions about the legislative work we’ve done so far this year.
