Dear Friend,

It's been a busy week here in Washington, D.C. South Korean President Yoon Suk-Yeol paid an official state visit to the United States, the Ways and Means Committee held a hearing to bring accountability and transparency to the IRS, and I introduced a resolution commemorating Black April.

Additionally, my office is still accepting nominations for the AAPI of Distinction Awards, and I am proud to announce the Business of the Month.

Get the details about all of this and more below, and make sure to follow my FacebookInstagram, and Twitter to get these updates in real-time.

An Historic Week for the U.S./R.O.K Alliance

Last week I shared with you about the letter I wrote to South Korean President Yoon Sook Yeol welcoming him to the United States and encouraging him to continue building up the trilateral relationship between the United States, South Korea, and Japan. This week, as President Yoon arrived in the United States for an official state visit, I joined my colleagues to introduce a resolution commemorating the 70th anniversary of the U.S./R.O.K. alliance.

I was honored to represent the vibrant Korean American community in Southern California at the White House state dinner in President Yoon’s honor and to escort him to the floor of the House as he became the first Korean president in over a decade to address a joint session of Congress. His message was clear: the alliance between the U.S. and the R.O.K. transformed South Korea from a war-torn, fragile democracy to a thriving economic power that has become a cornerstone of preserving peace and democracy around the world.

As a proud first-generation American, I am honored to bridge the gap between Korea and the United States and strengthen our ties with such an important ally. Together, we have the ability build mutually beneficial economic trade agreements that will significantly grow both of our economies. Korea is also a vital partner in promoting peace in the region and countering the aggression of North Korea. I look forward to continuing to strengthen the friendship between our two nations. We are stronger together.

to Commemorate Black April

Today, as Co-Chairs of the Vietnam Caucus Rep. Lou Correa (D-CA) and I introduced a bipartisan resolution to commemorate the 48th Anniversary of Black April, the Fall of Saigon, and the tragic collapse of the Republic of Vietnam.

In April of 1975, North Vietnam began an offensive campaign attacking cities in South Vietnam with the goal of overtaking the country, blatantly violating the terms of the Paris Peace Accord. On April 30, communist forces invaded the Republic of Vietnam’s capital city in an event known as the “Fall of Saigon.” Each year, Vietnamese American communities across the United States commemorate and mourn these events during the month of “Black April.”

I am honored to join the Vietnamese American community in Orange County’s Little Saigon and around the world in remembering those who lost their lives pursuing freedom and how blessed we are to live in the greatest country in the world. Communism has caused suffering to so many. On the 48th anniversary of Black April, we reaffirm our commitment to defending democracy and preserving the memory of those who were lost.
