Before we head into Memorial Day weekend, I want to give you an update on what I've been up to this last week in Congress. As we come to the end of Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, I'm introducing a resolution to condemn the recent rise in anti-Asian hate incidents over the last few years. The House of Representatives also passed major legislation to stop the spread of deadly fentanyl. Finally, I participated in a Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee hearing on the state of our customs policies and how they are impacting our supply chains.

Standing Up to Anti-Asian Hate

Rep. Steel Introduces Resolution to Stop AAPI Hate

Between March 19, 2020 and March 31, 2022, over 11,450 hate incidents were reported against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in all 50 States, territories, and in Washington, D.C. The victims’ race was the primary reason for the violence committed against them. The rising trende of violence against the AAPI community goes directly against everything this nation stands for.

That’s why this week, during AAPI Heritage Month, I introduced a bipartisan, bicameral resolution to stop anti-Asian hate. As a proud Korean American, I am pleased to work across the aisle and chambers to introduce this important resolution.

Enough is enough. We must come alongside our neighbors and friends to stand strong in the face of evil. Only together can we end the discrimination and hatred experienced by Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in Southern California and across the country.

Stopping the Flow of Illicit Fentanyl

WATCH: Rep. Steel Urges Passage of the HALT Fentanyl Act

On Thursday, the House of Representatives passed the Halt All Lethal Trafficking of (HALT) Fentanyl Act, which will permanently re-schedule fentanyl and ensure the federal government recognizes this substance for the deadly threat it is. It will give our law enforcement the tools they need to combat this danger, and it will empower researchers to better understand the full scope of the drug’s impact on American’s health.

The flow of fentanyl across our unsecure borders is not only a public health crisis, but a national security crisis as well. With as much as 90% of illicit fentanyl coming from China, the Chinese Communist Party has a hand in the poisoning of American citizens. Fentanyl poisoning is now the number one cause of death among adults between 18 and 49, resulting in the loss of tens of thousands of American lives.

I believe we owe a solution to the families who have lost a loved one to fentanyl and we have a duty to protect American from this poison. That’s why I proudly voted in favor of the HALT Fentanyl Act.
