Flavored Tobacco Products

Dear Friend,

After years of declining tobacco use among teenagers, we’ve recently seen a sharp increase tied to e-cigarettes or vaping. In 2018, one in five high schoolers reported using an e-cigarette at least once a day. While there are still a lot of unknowns about the long-term effects of vaping, we know flavored products make it more likely that young people who wouldn’t have otherwise used a tobacco product will start using one. And as a pediatrician, I know that teens are more at risk for becoming addicted to nicotine because their brains are still developing.

As you may know, the House will be voting this week on H.R. 2339, the Reversing the Youth Tobacco Epidemic Act. This bill aims to reduce youth tobacco usage. Among other things, it would ban the sale of flavored nicotine-containing products like e-cigarettes and prohibit the online sale of those products. As I head back to D.C. to debate and vote on H.R. 2339, I want to hear your thoughts on this issue.
