Community Funding Projects

Congresswoman Manning is working hard to find every opportunity to bring federal funding to important projects that will benefit our District - from public safety, to economic development, to education, to infrastructure.  Here are a few funding projects that were announced this past month.

Rep. Manning Secures $3 Million for Community Safety Project 

Congresswoman Manning secured $16,513,000 in funding for community projects located in North Carolina’s Sixth Congressional District. This funding was passed into law as a part of the omnibus government funding bill in March of 2022. Included in this federal funding is $3 million dedicated to community safety. 

The $3 million will fund the installation of a new computer aided dispatch system for Guilford Metro 911. Watch below to see a Guilford Metro 911 representative discuss the impact of the federal funding they received.

Rep. Manning Secures $1.5 Million to Provide Free Internet Access to Local Students
 

Included in the $16.5 million for community funding projects that Congresswoman Manning secured is $1.5 million dedicated to providing internet access for Guilford County students living in qualifying low income neighborhoods. 

The High Speed Education Network Access Pilot is a program being implemented through the University of North Carolina - Greensboro, and the Technology Data Institute (TDI) to bring free, reliable, and sustainable internet access to learners of all ages in Guilford County.

Rep. Manning Secures $450,000 for United Way of Forsyth County

Congresswoman Manning secured $450,000 in federal funding for United Way of Forsyth County to boost their tutoring and enrichment services for students from K-12th grade.

Congresswoman Manning joined United Way President & CEO Cindy Gordineer and WSFC Board of Education Chair Deanna Kaplan to announce the funding. 

Federal Funding to Increase Travel and Tourism In Forsyth County

Thanks to the American Rescue Plan Act that Democrats in Congress voted to pass, an additional investment of over $500,000 is coming to Forsyth County.

This investment will enhance tourism related to the majestic Blue Ridge Parkway and attract even more economic development to our region.


News from Washington, D.C.

Legislative Updates 

Affordable Insulin Now Act 
Twenty-six percent of Americans with diabetes ration their insulin at least once a year. Congresswoman Manning believes that no person should have to put their health and lives at risk due to high costs of medication. 

To help Americans afford insulin, Congresswoman Manning voted to pass the Affordable Insulin Now Act, which caps the cost of insulin at $35/month.

Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act of 2022
Congresswoman Manning remains committed to supporting Ukraine as they endure attacks from Russia. Congresswoman Manning voted to pass the Ukraine Democracy Defend Lend-Lease Act of 2022 which would allow President Biden to expedite the delivery of military equipment to Ukraine and other Eastern European countries affected by Russia’s invasion through lend-lease agreements. The bill now heads to President Biden's desk to be signed into law. 

Committee Updates 

Foreign Affairs Committee 
As a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congresswoman Manning participated in a hearing entitled The State Department's Foreign Policy Priorities and the FY23 Budget Request.

Congresswoman Manning asked Secretary Blinken questions regarding the United Sates' response to Russia's invasion of Ukraine and expressed concern about the recent attack on Moldova, a country that has had a long relationship with North Carolina and with the Greensboro community.

President Biden Visits NC-06

On April 15th, President Biden visited North Carolina's Sixth Congressional District. Congresswoman Manning greeted the President when he landed at Piedmont Triad International Airport (PTI) and joined him in visiting North Carolina A&T State University.

Congresswoman Manning is ready to continue to work with President Biden to strengthen our supply chains, bring down costs for families, and create even more good-paying jobs right here in North Carolina.

Congresswoman Manning joined President Biden on a tour of the new Harold L. Martin Sr. Engineering Research & Innovation Complex at North Carolina A &T State University. On the tour, President Biden and Congresswoman Manning observed the new cutting edge technology that students learn and use, including 'Spot,' a robotic dog.

Greensboro Grasshoppers Opening Night Game

Congresswoman Manning attended the Greensboro Grasshoppers first game of the season this month.
At the game, Congresswoman Manning welcomed new Greensboro Grasshopper's owner, Andy Sandler.

Prestige Barber College
Prestige Barber College is a college of barbering education located in Greensboro. Prestige Barber College also teaches its students business and entrepreneurship skills. 

Owner Gene Blackmon welcomed Congresswoman Manning, North Carolina Representative Ashton Clemmons, Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro BIG Equity Fund Chair Mae Douglas, and community leader CJ Brinson for a visit earlier this month.

Triad Hindu Festival
Congresswoman Manning attended the Triad Hindu Food Festival of 2022. Congresswoman Manning enjoyed delicious food and meeting with members of the Triad Hindu community.

OPEAT Silver Tech Graduation Ceremony 
OPEAT Silver Tech, the Organization to Provide Equal Access to Technology, hosted a graduation ceremony for seniors who completed technology training to address pandemic-related isolation.
Congresswoman Manning spoke at their graduation and congratulated the seniors that completed this program.

Guilford Metro 911 Achievement Award Ceremony 
Congresswoman Manning attended the Guilford Metro 911 Achievement Award Ceremony to honor the employees who work tirelessly to keep our community safe.


This year, Congresswoman Manning secured $3 million in federal funding for Guilford Metro 911 to install a new computer-aided dispatch system, so they can quickly assist those in need.

Forsyth Technical Community College
 
Congresswoman Manning met with students and leaders from Forsyth Technical Community College to tour their Transportation Technology Center and discuss her work in Congress to support community colleges.

Congresswoman Manning joined members of the Triad Muslim community for an Iftar dinner to break the fast during Ramadan.

Caring Services, Inc

Congresswoman Manning visited Caring Services, Inc. to discuss how funding from the American Rescue Plan, which Democrats voted to pass last year, can be maximized to support community members suffering from the opioid epidemic in the Triad.
Congresswoman Manning thanks Caring Services, Inc. for their work to get our neighbors the care they need and is working in Congress to put an end to the opioid epidemic.

KAO Specialty Chemicals Headquarters and Plant
KAO Specialty Chemicals Headquarters and Plant is located in High Point.
As an advocate for STEM education and research in Congress, Congresswoman Manning was happy to meet with members of the American Chemistry Council, KAO leaders, and chemists who work in the KAO headquarters in High Point to discuss how Congress can continue to support the science industry.

Congresswoman Manning was happy to visit Reading Connections in High Point to witness the great work they are doing to improve educational equity for people of all ages in our community.

North Carolina's Sixth District 2022 Congressional Art Competition 

Congresswoman Manning hosted the second annual North Carolina Sixth District Congressional Art Competition Reception to honor the incredible students who won this year’s competition. The reception was held at the GreenHill Center for North Carolina Art.

The reception was attended by the first, second, third place winners, Congressional Art Competition judges, and local elected leaders. Those in attendance included Guilford County Schools Superintendent Sharon Contreras, Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Superintendent Tricia McManus, and Greensboro City Councilmembers Nancy Hoffmann, Tammi Thurm, and Justin Outling. Prior to the congratulatory reception, the artwork submitted by this year’s contestants was displayed at the Greensboro Cultural Center from April 14th-April 25th. The winner’s artwork will be displayed in the United States Capitol.

“The abundance of artistic talent in North Carolina’s Sixth District was on full display with this year’s Congressional Art Competition. Students from every corner of the Triad submitted over 90 pieces of phenomenal artwork,” said Congresswoman Manning. “I look forward to seeing the winners' artwork displayed in the United States Capitol and my congressional offices.”

CDC Mask Guidance
The CDC recently updated masking guidance based on the COVID numbers in communities. To check on your community and to learn more, visit https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/prevent-getting-sick/about-face-coverings.html.

Free at-home COVID-19 Rapid Test Kits
The Biden Administration secured at-home COVID-19 test kits for those who request them. You can order your completely free, rapid tests online—and have them delivered to your home directly. The United States Postal Service will ship them in 7 to 12 days. Please note that each residential address is limited to one order per month, which contains four tests.

COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Shots
The best way to protect yourself and others from new variants is by getting fully vaccinated, including a booster shot for adults. A second booster shot for the COVID-19 vaccine is now available for people age 50 and older and those with compromised immune systems. Click here to see if you are eligible for the vaccine booster shot.

COVID-19 Vaccine Eligibility 
Everyone 5 years of age and older is now eligible to get a COVID-19 vaccination. The Pfizer, Moderna, and Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccines have received full FDA approval. Find a location close to you to get the vaccine by visiting: https://www.vaccines.gov/.

Social Security In-Office Appointments

In early April, the Social Security Administration added more in-person appointments and began offering in-person service for people without an appointment.

The Social Security Administration is strongly encouraging those looking for an appointment to visit their website and schedule appointments in advance.
