Dear Friend,

Congress has officially entered the August District Work Period, and I sat down to reflect on some of the amazing wins we've secured together. I also want to highlight some of the amazing future leaders that interned in my offices this summer, and my team is hosting an information night for students interested in attending one of the U.S. Military Service Academies.

Get the details about all of this and more below, and make sure to follow my FacebookInstagram, and Twitter to get these updates in real-time.

WATCH: Rep. Steel Delivers a Message During the August Work Period

As Congress enters the August District Work Period, I’m eager to be back in the 45th district this month. I’ll be spending my time meeting with first responders, business owners, and local leaders, and listening to the concerns of my constituents. While Congress still has a lot of work left to do this year, we’ve also secured some big wins together.

So far, I’ve introduced 16 bills and cosponsored 84 others to address the most pressing issues facing our district and our nation. Our first act of the new Congress was to pass my bill to defund the Biden Administration’s 80-billion-dollar plan to hire 87,000 new IRS agents and target American taxpayers with a flood of paperwork. Most recently, the Ways and Means Committee passed my bill to lower health care costs by ensuring all hospitals publish their prices and encouraging competition.

Additionally, I’m working on policies to lower taxes for working families, ensure every student can achieve their own American Dream, and deter the aggression of foreign adversaries like Iran, North Korea, and Communist China. We’ve achieved a lot together so far this year – and we are just getting started.

Get Your Education, Serve Our Nation

For students considering their next steps after high school, the Military Service Academies present an exciting opportunity to receive a world-class education and unmatched leadership skills, paid for by the U.S. Military. The honor of attending a service academy comes with the obligation and commitment to serve in the military for a minimum of five years upon graduation.

Members of Congress may nominate candidates for appointment to four of the five U.S. service academies: U.S. Military Academy (USMA), the U.S. Naval Academy (USNA); the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA); and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. The fifth service academy, the U.S. Coast Guard Academy (USCGA), does not require a congressional nomination for appointment.

To request a Military Academy Nomination from my office, please complete the form on my website, and someone my office will be in touch with additional information. In the mean time, visit my website to learn more about the application process.

My team will be hosting an information night for interested applicants. Representatives from the U.S. Military Naval, Air Force, Merchant Marine, and Coast Guard Academies will be present to answer your questions about what it means to attend one of these institutions.

WHEN: September 07, 2023 from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM

WHERE: Founders Village

My team was so fortunate to have such great interns serving the people of CA45 in my D.C. and Cypress offices this summer. I want to thank them for their hard work and wish these young leaders all the best in their future endeavors.

Additionally, the application to intern in my one of my offices for the Fall semester is open. Students selected for an internship will gain invaluable work experience while learning about the inner workings of the House of Representatives.

Candidates must possess excellent writing and verbal communication skills. In addition, we are seeking highly collaborative team players with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. If you are a hardworking, dedicated individual who has a desire to help improve the Southern California community, this internship is for you!

This competition encourages computer science and innovation skills and offers an opportunity for students to explore potential careers in the STEM field. The competition is hosted by the Congressional Internet Caucus.

Each winning app may be put on display in the U.S. Capitol Building for one year and will be featured on the House of Representatives website. Winning students are also invited to the #HouseofCode Capitol Hill Reception in Washington D.C.
