Rep. Manning Statement on Uvalde Shooting

Congresswoman Manning released the following statement following the mass shooting in Uvalde, Texas at Robb Elementary School.

"Once again, families are experiencing unfathomable grief because a violent man, with easy access to weapons of war, orchestrated a mass shooting in an elementary school. This cannot be the violent reality we accept for our children.

We must decide that we are willing to take action to prevent guns deaths, and we must start by taking common sense steps that the vast majority of Americans support. In Congress, I’ve voted for bipartisan legislation to implement background checks and red flag laws, to close the Charleston Loophole, and to make our schools, houses of worship, malls, entertainment venues, and streets free from deadly gun violence. Senate Republicans refuse to vote for these common sense measures.

We can and we must do more to ensure the safety of our children, our families, and our community members who are living their lives in fear of gun violence. I urge the Senate to take immediate action to pass commonsense gun violence prevention legislation. In the absence of action, I implore the American people to vote for leaders who will demand a change.

My heart breaks for the families and communities who are forever changed by yesterday’s mass shooting, but it is not enough to offer thoughts and prayers. We must take action and enact solutions now."

Legislative Updates

Bringing Down Gas Prices

Congresswoman Manning voted to pass H.R. 7688, the Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act, to prevent oil and gas companies from unfairly raising prices.

“Oil and gas companies are announcing record profits while families are struggling to afford higher prices at the pump. That’s unacceptable,” said Congresswoman Manning. “In the wake of a global pandemic and a war of Russian aggression in Ukraine, it is wrong for big oil companies to profit unjustly at the expense of hard-working Americans. I voted to pass the Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act to hold these companies accountable and protect American’s hard-earned paychecks.”

Supporting Fire Fighters

Congresswoman Manning cosponsored and voted in favor of the Federal Firefighters Fairness Act to improve injury and illness benefits for federal firefighters.

"I’m thankful for the brave firefighters in our community and across the country who work in dangerous conditions to keep others safe. Firefighters work to protect us- it’s time we do the same for them," said Congresswoman Manning

Addressing the Infant Formula Shortage

Congresswoman Manning voted to pass legislation to address the baby formula shortage and get baby formula to families in North Carolina and nationwide.

Congresswoman Manning voted to pass the Access to Baby Formula Act, to help improve access to infant formula for vulnerable families during the formula shortage. President Biden signed the bill into law, and it is now working to protect our most vulnerable families.

Additionally, Congresswoman Manning joined a bipartisan group calling on President Biden to invoke the Defense Production Act (DPA) to increase the domestic production of baby formula. Following Congresswoman Manning's call, President Biden invoked the DPA. This additional measure will get baby formula back on the shelves.

Finally, Rep. Manning also voted in favor of the Infant Formula Supplemental Appropriations Act, to provide the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) with funding to address the formula shortage and help prevent future shortages. This bill provides the FDA with resources so they can prevent fraudulent products from being placed on shelves and to help acquire better data on the infant formula marketplace.

Protecting Roe vs. Wade

The Supreme Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, taking away the constitutionally protected right to obtain an abortion. This creates the potential for a dramatic reversal of reproductive health care rights in North Carolina and in other states across the nation.

Congresswoman Manning believes a woman's personal health care decisions are between her and her doctor, not politicians. Congresswoman Manning voted in the House to protect women’s freedom to make decisions about their health care. Additionally, Congresswoman Manning introduced legislation to expand maternal health care so that all mothers get the care they need.

Following the release of a draft Supreme Court opinion, Congresswoman Manning joined her fellow members of Congress in calling for the passage of the Women's Health Protection Act in the Senate, which would codify abortion rights into law.
