News from Representative Waltz

Dear Friend,

Thank you for reading my newsletter! My team and I continue to work for you and our community. It was a very eventful week and I’m excited to tell you about what we accomplished. Here are some highlights:

  • House Democrats prioritized a bill to legalize marijuana instead of passing COVID-19 relief
  • I sent a letter with my fellow Florida congressmen to the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Air Force welcoming a visit to Patrick Air Force Base for U.S. Space Command headquarters
  • Moderna and Pfizer applied for U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) emergency authorization for their COVID-19 vaccines

DEMOCRATS PICK POT OVER SMALL BUSINESSES: As many of you know, Americans have been waiting for months for Congress to pass another COVID relief package. Small businesses are being crushed by this pandemic and they're asking Congress for help. I am horrified that instead of helping, House Democrats prioritized bills this week to legalize marijuana and ban big cat ownership. Republicans have been asking Nancy Pelosi to consider COVID relief or at least release the $138 billion in already-passed Paycheck Protection Program funding for small businesses for months.

Shockingly, Speaker Pelosi admitted Friday the fault was hers and said she was "proud" to block COVID-19 relief to score political points. This is not how your members of Congress, certainly not the Speaker of the House, should legislate. The virus doesn’t care who’s President – and neither do the millions of Americans who have lost their livelihoods because of this pandemic.

BRINGING SPACE COMMAND TO FLORIDA: Florida has been at the forefront of space exploration and innovation for decades. Last month, we were so excited to hear Patrick Air Force Base in Brevard County was in the running to become the new Space Command headquarters. This would be great for our state and our community. This week, I joined the Florida Congressional delegation in a letter to the U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Air Force to welcome them to visit our Space Coast and see why Florida is the best place for SPACECOM to call home.

OPERATION WARP SPEED UPDATE: The coronavirus vaccine is right around the corner. On Monday, Moderna applied for authorization of its COVID-19 vaccine. Once approved by the FDA, Moderna expects to have 20 million doses available by the end of 2020 and up to 1 billion available globally in 2021. Along with Pfizer, Moderna is the second company to apply for this approval – a huge testament to the success of Operation Warp Speed led by President Trump.

GOOD NEWS OF THE WEEK: This week, I was incredibly impressed by local Amazon driver Sean Campbell, who jumped into action while delivering packages in New Smyrna Beach to rescue an elderly man from his burning home. Heroes walk among us – and I’m so proud of servant leaders like Sean for protecting those in need in our community!
