Dear Friend,
As we prepare to celebrate Labor Day on Monday, I want to recognize all the Hoosiers who are working hard every day to keep our community moving forward. I also want to thank those in organized labor who fought so hard for many of the job-related protections our frontline workers and all American workers enjoy today. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown just how vital frontline workers are, and how much more we need to do to help them succeed.
Right now, the situation for American workers is extremely dire. Today’s jobs report reveals that an increasing number of people are losing their jobs permanently. For more than 24 weeks now, more than one million Americans each week have filed for Initial Unemployment Insurance and Pandemic Unemployment Insurance. In addition, countless people who are employed don’t feel safe on the job and worry every day about getting sick or getting their loved ones sick.
This public health and economic crisis will worsen if we don’t take action now. More than 100 days ago, the House passed the Heroes Act, our boldest COVID-19 relief package yet. It extends the extra $600 a week in unemployment insurance until next year, provides $1 trillion for frontline workers, allocates $75 billion for testing, tracing and treatment, and more. The Senate needs to take up this important bill immediately. I will continue urging my Senate colleagues to pass it.
America’s workers make our country strong, and we can’t abandon them -- especially in this extremely challenging time. I won’t rest until these Americans get the support they need and deserve.
Your Friend,
André |
