District Update |June 7, 2021

Dear Friend,

I hope you and your family are staying healthy and well. I wanted to inform you on my recent work here in Arizona, and other important updates.

Cavuto: Coast to Coast Interview

Image

Last week, I joined Neil Cavuto on Fox Business to discuss the potential impact President Biden’s $6 trillion budget would have on hard-working Americans, and how America should be combatting the recent ransomware cyber attacks taking place. At a time when we are seeing increased prices from this Administration's increased spending, it is critical for us to promote pro-growth policies that will keep the tax cuts in place, help Americans get back to work, and support small businesses looking to retain their workers.

The proposal for trillions of dollars in new spending, at time when we are continuing to see prices rise for gas, groceries, and other forms of transportation, it is important that we promote policies to get us back to the record economic growth we saw prior to the pandemic.

Tax Changes in the Budget

I wanted to make you aware of the tax changes outlined in President Biden's budget that would impact Arizona families and businesses, should these proposals ever be signed into law.

  • Increases tax and financial burdens on family-owned and operated businesses when the business is passed from generation to generation.
  • This second death tax would also impact family homes inherited upon death of a parent.
  • Increases the top capital gains tax rate in Arizona to almost 50%.

These changes would undo much of the regulatory and tax reforms we passed in the years prior to the pandemic which created the booming economy we once saw. The proposed tax changes would hurt real estate investment, small businesses, and every Arizonan who is seeking growth and opportunity. I will continue to update you on if these changes ever became law. Letter to ICE

Image

I sent the above letter to Acting Director of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Tae Johnson, requesting information on the immigration facility in a closed Scottsdale hotel in our community. I have been requesting additional information from the Biden Administration, and spoke with officials from ICE this morning about the facility.

In advance of this facility’s opening, local Scottsdale leaders were informed of the proposed plans. I was also informed by ICE today that roughly 100 individuals will be staying at this specific location. There is still more information our office has requested in regard to the facility’s operations.

Please know that I have requested ICE provide my office with regular updates and answers to the above questions. I will continue to press the Administration for answers and monitor this situation closely, as the safety and security of my constituents and our community is my number one priority.

Upcoming Service Academy Events

As a Member of Congress, each year I have the honor of nominating a limited number of students for scholarships to attend a U.S. Military Service Academy. This week, it was a pleasure to meet our local students recognized for their Service Academy Appointments. I wish each of these students good luck in their future endeavors, and we thank you for your service to our country!

Our office will be co-hosting two upcoming events for Arizonan students interested in applying to a U.S. Service Academy this year. If you know a student interested, our first Academy Fair will be on June 12th, from 10am-12pm, at the Church for the Nations in Phoenix to help students learn more about the congressional nomination and application process directly from congressional staff, and representatives from each of the U.S. Service Academies.

Our office will also be joining fellow members of the Arizona delegation for a virtual Service Academy event June 19th, from 10am-12:30pm. If your student is interested in attending either of these events, please RSVP here

Important Passport Resources

I encourage all Arizonans who plan on traveling in the future to check their current passports for expirations. First time applicants are encouraged to apply for their new passport 90 days prior to their travel plans as the State Department is still experiencing delays with processing previous passports, and now with the influx of travel, their processing times are lengthening.  Passport renewals may be submitted via postal mail; but ample time is suggested to ensure timely processing. Remember, apply early and visit the U. S. Department of State website here for more helpful resources.

Travelers can also monitor advisories from the State Department by signing up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive important information from relevant Embassies about safety conditions in your destination country, helping you make informed decisions about your travel plans.

Thank you for taking the time to read my weekly e-newsletter. If you would like to contact me, please feel welcome to browse my website for the different services our office can help you with.

Sincerely,

David Schweikert
