District Update |June 14, 2021

Dear Friend,

I hope you and your family are staying healthy and well. I wanted to provide you with some updates on my recent trip to the southern border, and other district work here in Arizona.

Today we celebrate our Nation's symbol of prosperity and the true meaning behind the American Dream. We thank our brave men and women who fight everyday to defend our flag, and are forever grateful to live in the Land of the Free.

My Experience at the Southern Border

Image

Last week, I drove down to Nogales, AZ to the Mariposa Land Port of Entry at our southern border to see firsthand the ongoing crisis happening in our own state. At the border, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers and Border Patrol Agents informed me of the following:

  • Gaps in the border wall create serious challenges for border patrol, who now have to keep officers stationed in dangerous conditions at the gaps for security.
  • Available border wall materials, already funded through tax-payer dollars and authorized for construction, are now rusting next to gaps in the wall.
  • Nearly 2/3 of border apprehensions have been single adult males, as opposed to families or children. In FY2021, single adults make up 70.95% of total apprehensions, while unaccompanied minors make up 8.60%.
  • Strong security through technology is especially needed at our Ports of Entry to continue allowing safe trade between Arizona and our neighbors.
  • More adequate resources and technology are needed by both CBP officers and Border Patrol Agents to allow them to safely do their job.

I will continue to support policies that provide the necessary resources for our CBP officers, and promote safety and security across Arizona communities. It is more important than ever that we secure our border, and end the cross-border crimes that are endangering children and families.

Ways and Means Hearing on Health Care Spending

On Tuesday I joined a Ways and Means Committee Hearing with Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), Xavier Becerra, where I discussed the need to have a revolution in our healthcare system to promote technology, expand accessibility to care, and crash the price for every American

President Biden's proposed budget, which consists of trillions of dollars in new spending, would drive our country further into debt, and hurt programs like Social Security and Medicare. I am continuing to urge this Administration to focus on solutions that will create a healthier society, while expanding access to health care technologies.
