District Update March 27, 2023

Dear ,

I hope you and your family are doing well. I wanted to provide a few updates on my work this past week for the residents of Arizona's First Congressional District.

Congress Must Take Its Fiscal Responsibility Seriously

In my speech on the House Floor last week, I warned my Democratic colleagues about the consequences of a debt ceiling increase without any serious attempts to reduce the deficit. By just raising the debt ceiling, we'd signal to debt markets around the world that the United States doesn't take its fiscal responsibility seriously. The federal government cannot continue to borrow money at unsustainable rates.

I also analyzed the actual cost of the energy tax credits in the Democrats' inflation bill and found that the Congressional Budget Office incorrectly scored some of their initial cost estimates. For instance, a surge of new battery cell plants across the country may mean that production credits for battery cells produced in the United States will cost up to $196.5 billion, a considerable jump up from the $30.6 billion initially scored by CBO. My Republican colleagues and I are working to hold the Democrats accountable for misleading the American people about their massive, inflation-boosting legislation.

Ensuring Fair Treatment by the World Trade Organization

I had a discussion with United States Trade Representative Katherine Tai at a Ways and Means Committee hearing on Friday about the importance of creating positive reforms to strengthen the World Trade Organization (WTO). For decades, the United States, through the WTO, has helped shape the rules for global commerce and knocked down trade barriers. Our nation deserves to be treated fairly when engaged in trade dispute settlements.

Hiking the Grand Canyon

Image

I enjoy leading hiking tours of the Grand Canyon, and this past weekend, I completed my 39th hike to the bottom. The views along the way were breathtaking, and I'm glad I could show this group the beauty of our state.

What I’m Reading & Why It Matters

Image

I'm monitoring several stories this week that could have great impact on the long-term health of our society as well as the future of our nation's energy production. The first article is on Vertex Pharmaceuticals' type 1 diabetes cell therapy heading to the clinic after the FDA cleared the treatment. The second one is about certain drugs which were developed to treat diabetes and are now used for cosmetic weight loss. Lastly, I'm reading an article on battery alternatives for energy storage that could lead to an affordable and enduring method to stabilize our nation's energy grid.

Thank you for taking the time to read this update on my latest work in Washington, D.C. and Arizona's First Congressional District! If you have any comments or concerns, I encourage you to reach out to my office.

Sincerely,
