Dear ,

I hope you and your family are doing well! I wanted to provide a few updates on my work this past week for the residents of Arizona’s First Congressional District.

The Wheels Are Falling Off on U.S. Sovereign Debt Projections

Last week, I delivered a speech on the House Floor to talk about how Americans are poorer today than they were the day President Biden took office over two years ago. I also pointed out that workers and savers are hurt most by historic inflation levels. Additionally, I noted that the Congressional Budget Office’s FY23 deficit projections have functionally doubled over the past 12 months due to skyrocketing health care costs, higher interest rates, and a lower return on tax receipts — essentially a triple whammy.

Visiting the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group

Image

Today, I visited the Salt River Wild Horse Management Group to observe how they care for wild horses in a humane and safe environment. I have always advocated for better protection for Arizona's wild horse population, and I will continue to defend these animals from any cruel and inhumane treatment.

Fall Internships Now Open

Image

We are now accepting intern applications for Fall 2023!

Students interested in applying should be motivated, detail oriented, display a strong work ethic, and interact well with constituents. In addition, applicants should have a strong interest in the legislative process and the function of Congress.

Strong ties to the First District of Arizona or the state of Arizona are preferred, but not required. Priority is given to current college students, but recent high school graduates with exceptional credentials may be considered.

All interested applicants should email a cover letter, short writing sample, resume, and 3 letters of recommendation to one of the following staffers:

College students interested in interning in our Scottsdale district office may submit their application documents, as listed above, to Ernestina Borquez-Smith at Ernestina.borquez-smith@mail.house.gov.

Those interested in interning in our Washington, D.C. office may submit their application documents to Mason Maestas at Mason.maestas@mail.house.gov.

Speaking With Leadership Institute Young Professionals

I enjoyed speaking with a group of young professionals at the Leadership Institute on the main drivers of U.S. sovereign debt and the long-term consequences on our economy. They were a pretty bright bunch!

What I’m Reading & Why It Matters

Image

This week, I'm reading a story in Axios on how a surge in Medicare spending on hospitals and other services will help health care spending outpace inflation and top $7.2 trillion by 2031. Our nation's aging population and federal policy changes will combine to make Medicare experience the highest rate of growth among the major payers, rising 7.5% annually between 2022 and 2031.

Thank you for taking the time to read this update on my latest work in Washington, D.C. and Arizona’s First Congressional District! If you have any comments or concerns, I encourage you to reach out to my office.

Sincerely,
