I hope you and your family are doing well! I wanted to provide a few updates on my work this past week for the residents of Arizona’s First Congressional District.

Debunking Democrats' Empty Tax Proposals

Last week, I delivered a speech on the House Floor explaining how Congressional Democrats' tax proposals fall well short of achieving a balanced federal budget over the next decade. Even if the Left followed through on its pledge not to raise taxes on families making less than $400,000, that would leave only 2% of the population eligible to be taxed, which won't come close to financing the $2.5 trillion per year borrowing costs nine budget years from now.

Similarly, taxing 100% of income for those who make $500,000 or more only raises 5.1% of GDP, which would effectively blow up the economy. We must get serious about the alarming scale of borrowing that the government has accumulated over the past 12 months so that future generations aren't saddled with crippling debt, but time is ticking.

Let's Help U.S. Entrepreneurs and Families by Increasing Form 1099's Reporting Threshold

On Thursday, I wrote an op-ed for the Phoenix Business Journal promoting the Small Business Paperwork Savings Act, legislation I introduced last month to increase the Form 1099 reporting requirement threshold to account for cost-of-living adjustments since 1954, when the $600 threshold was first established in the Internal Revenue Code. My legislation was included in the House Ways and Means Committee's signature economic package which passed out of Committee in mid-June and awaits a full vote by the House.

Meeting With Arizona Teenage Republicans

I enjoyed chatting with several members of the Arizona Teenage Republicans who were visiting Washington, D.C. for the annual Teen Age Republicans (TARS) conference. The students discussed their career aspirations and interest in American politics, and I can't wait to see how successful they become in the near future.

Supporting Small Businesses With Kevin O'Leary

It was a pleasure to meet with Kevin O'Leary, aka "Mr. Wonderful," last week to discuss solutions to help American small businesses keep their lights on and pay their workers. I'm looking forward to continuing to fight for the thousands of small businesses in Arizona's First Congressional District this Congress.

Military Service Academy Applications

The online academy application portal for my office is now open to eligible high school students residing in Arizona's First Congressional District who are interested in attending one of our nation's premier military service academies. To learn more about the congressional nomination process and how to submit an application, please review the application form here. What I’m Reading & Why It Matters

This week, I'm reading a story in Fox Business regarding the IRS warning of a new mailing refund scam which seeks to trick taxpayers into handing over sensitive personal information. The scam is distributed in a cardboard envelope through a delivery service with the IRS masthead and language specifying that the letter is "in relation to your unclaimed refund." Additionally, the contact information and phone number listed in the notice do not belong to the IRS. 

The letter requests that the recipient provide "filing information" for their refund, including a cellphone number, bank routing information, a Social Security number and bank account type. Several glaring errors give away this scam. First, the date for filing tax refunds is listed as October 17, but the actual deadline for the filing extension is October 16. Additionally, the IRS will never initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text or social media regarding a bill or tax refund.
