Dear ,

I hope you and your family are doing well and had a blessed Thanksgiving with friends and family. Below, please find a few updates on my work last week for the residents of Arizona’s First Congressional District.

New Category of Pharmaceuticals Can Make Americans Healthier, Reduce Federal Spending

Recently, I sat down with NewsNation for an interview where I discussed the potential life-changing impacts that innovative weight loss drugs, known as GLP-1s, can have on Americans suffering from obesity and associated chronic conditions. I also talked about the U.S. Congress Joint Economic Committee's 2023 report which found that the cost of untreated obesity to taxpayers over the next decade would cost $4.1 trillion.

By reducing obesity through these effective treatments, we have the opportunity to not only substantially improve health outcomes but also ease the financial pressures on federal health care spending and reduce our out-of-control national debt.

Greeting Constituents at Fountain Hills Thanksgiving Day Parade

Image

Congressman Schweikert and district staff meet with constituents at the Fountain Hills Thanksgiving Day parade where they offered a variety of casework services to AZ-01 residents.

For more than two decades, one of my favorite fall festivities is leading the Fountain Hills Thanksgiving Day Parade. Each year, I’m beyond thankful to see thousands of familiar faces that are gleaming with gratitude. This parade continually reminds me of how important community is and makes me prouder each year to be able to represent Arizona’s First Congressional District.

Don't Get Scammed This Holiday Season

With the holiday season already upon us, it's important to be extra cautious when giving out personal information. Scammer activity ramps up during the holidays when average consumers are preoccupied with various holiday handfuls.

Some common ways to troubleshoot if you’ve fallen victim to scammers:

Be sure to sign up to receive my “Daily Debt Monitor” text messages that track real-time updates of our national debt at the end of each day. Subscribing is easy — head to schweikert.house.gov and fill out the required information on the homepage of my website.

I hope these updated numbers can provide some further insight as to why I am so adamant about reducing our outrageous government spending.

What I’m Reading & Why It Matters

Image

This week, I'm reading about how obesity drug maker Novo Nordisk is looking to give countries flexible pricing to purchase its weight loss drugs by offering a "buy now, pay later" option to treat more people who currently can't currently access the products.

I'm also reading this article revealing that a team of scientists at the University of Alberta has identified a certain gene in crucial insulin-producing cells, and the discovery is a step toward creating a set of drugs that could effectively cure diabetes in the form of a pill. Additionally, in a study published in Aging Cell, Mayo Clinic researchers analyzed zombie cells to explain aging at the cellular level.

Lastly, in early 2024, a fentanyl vaccine, designed by University of Montana researchers in collaboration with Inimmune, a Missoula-based biotech company, will undergo phase one of human clinical trials.

Thank you for taking the time to read this update on my latest work in Washington, D.C. and Arizona’s First Congressional District! If you have any comments or concerns, I encourage you to reach out to my office.

Sincerely,
