IMPORTANT UPDATES from CONGRESSMAN SMUCKER

Dear Friend,

I am writing to you to help answer some common questions my office has been receiving. With the individual tax filing deadline pushed back to May 17, and a new round of Economic Impact Payments being delivered, I want to break down your questions and provide answers.

For full information on Economic Impact Payments, you can visit the IRS’s website.

Questions:

I have not received the most recent Economic Impact Payment, is there a way for me to check my status?

As of April 14, the IRS has distributed 159 million Economic Impact Payments to Americans. If you have not received it, you can visit the IRS “Get My Payment” link here.

How will Social Security or SSI beneficiaries receive their Economic Impact Payment?

Social Security or SSI beneficiaries who receive their benefits by electronic payment began receiving their Economic Impact Payment on April 7. For Social Security or SSI beneficiaries who receive their monthly payments in the mail, paper checks for Economic Impact Payments began mailing on April 9. Click here for more information from the IRS  and the Social Security Administration.

I did not receive the previous Economic Impact Payments, is there still a way to get it?

If you did not receive the first two Economic Impact Payments and you were eligible to receive them, you can claim them on your 2020 income taxes. You can do so by filing a 2020 tax return and using the 2020 Recovery Rebate Credit. Learn more on the IRS website.

Are there tools to help me file my taxes?

The IRS offers tips, advice, and some resources for filers that need help filing their taxes. Visit their website to learn the ways the IRS can help you file your Federal Taxes for free.

Washington, DC Update

Fighting for the Unborn
This past Wednesday, I joined many of my colleagues in signing a discharge petition for the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act. A discharge petition is a procedural tool to bring a bill forward for a vote by the House of Representatives. I am a proud cosponsor of this legislation and will always be a voice for life.

Opposing Court Packing -- a “Bonehead Idea”
This week progressive members of the House introduced legislation to increase the number of Supreme Court Justices from nine current members to thirteen. The Supreme Court has had nine justices since 1869, but Congressional Democrats will stop at nothing from trying to pack the court to enact their radical agenda pushed by liberal activists. The radicals should listen to President Biden when he called packing the court “a bonehead idea.” This legislation is ludicrous, and I will oppose it.

Introducing Bipartisan Rail Investment Legislation
This week I reintroduced bipartisan legislation to invest in short line, regional and passenger rail with Rep. Ann McLane Kuster (D-NH). Our legislation would reform the Railroad Rehabilitation and Improvement Financing Program, which has the potential to provide billions of new investments in rail programs, but is currently underutilized. Learn more about this legislation on my website.

Supporting Wage Equity
This week, I cosponsored legislation introduced by Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York, the Wage Equity Act. The bill would encourage employers to evaluate their pay practices, among many other provisions empowering women in the workplace and ensure that pay differences between members of the opposite sex are due to legitimate, business-related concerns. Learn more about the Wage Equity Act.
