I wanted to make sure you were aware of the latest news from my office. 

Rep. Banks appointed ranking member of January 6 committee  

In case you missed it, last night, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy appointed me to serve as the ranking member on Speaker Pelosi’s Select Committee to investigate January 6.

I have accepted Leader McCarthy's appointment because we need leaders who will ask the tough questions. Among them, why was the U.S. Capitol unprepared and vulnerable to attack on January 6?

If we are serious about investigating political violence, then we need to study not just the January 6 riot but also the hundreds of violent political riots last summer when many more innocent Americans and law-enforcement officers were attacked. 

As the ranking member of this select committee, I will do everything possible to give the American people the facts about the lead up to the January 6 riot that day as well as the responses from congressional leadership and the White House.

Further, I will not allow this committee to be turned into a forum for condemning millions of Americans because of their sincerely held beliefs.
