News from Representative David Scott

March 31, 2021

Greetings,

Last week, I chaired a historic hearing to review the current status of Black farmers in the United States. According to reports from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the number of Black farmers in the U.S. declined by over 90% since 1900. Currently, black farmers account for only 1.7% of farms in the United States, and they only receive approximately 0.7% of total USDA payments.

“This systemic discrimination continues to be felt by Black farmers today, who are still disadvantaged in USDA programs,” Chairman Scott said in his opening statement. “This festering wound on the soul of American agriculture must be healed.

Notes From The Community

I just wanted to personally thank you for all the help you and your staff have provided me. I was not getting my annuity, but you were able to push the United Sates Office of Personnel Management and got it going. I was also getting charged double for my life insurance and your staff acted promptly to address this issue and get it resolved. I am so relieved to have all this behind me now. Thank you for your staff’s courtesy and professionalism.

I just wanted to thank you once again for your help in recovering my 1099 tax form from the Social Security Administration. I have been trying to get it since the beginning of March, but they said that it was delayed. I called and called, but I couldn’t reach anyone. When I told your office about this, a caseworker got right on it for me, and it was taken care of promptly. I am so grateful because now I am able to move forward. Thank you again!

This month, the U.S. House of Representatives took steps to curb the epidemic of gun violence by passing legislation to strengthen background check requirements. Do you believe that background checks should be mandatory for all firearm purchases?
