Sixth District Perspectives
with Congressman Ben Cline

The New Year represents a time to reflect on the past and focus on coming opportunities. As the calendar turns into another year, House Republicans are eager to continue our work for the American people and the progress that we have made in the last year. While home over Christmas, it was great to see folks back in the Valley, hear their opinions on important issues, and visit the next generation of leaders in our community. Rest assured, as Congress deals with the issues confronting our nation, I will always fight to ensure that your concerns are heard and that the federal government works for the Sixth District of Virginia.

Back To Work

With the beginning of the second session of the 118th Congress, our Nation faces many challenges. We must address the crisis at our southern border created by President Biden's open border and amnesty policies. In December, there were 302k illegal migrant encounters at our southern border - yet another record-setting month. This is unacceptable, and if Congress does not take action now, this problem will only continue to get worse, and communities will continue to be ravaged by the impacts of an open border. We must continue to pressure the Senate to pass legislation, such as the Secure the Border Act (H.R. 2), to combat this issue and ensure national security.

Second, we must continue to stand with Israel, our greatest democratic ally in the Middle East. Last year, the House of Representatives passed bipartisan legislation reaffirming our support and providing necessary aid. Unfortunately, the Senate has failed to act on the bill. As their fight continues, we must stand with Israel in their battle for democracy and freedom.

Third, we must continue to push for fiscal sanity in Washington. Last week marked the dubious milestone of our national debt hitting $34 trillion dollars. That equates to over $100,000 for every man, woman, and child. This is unsustainable, and House Republicans have a plan to take this burden off the backs of the American people and to build economic stability.

Oversight Into Biden's Broken Border

The deteriorating border under Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas and President Biden is a significant concern for many across the Sixth District and throughout America. Every month another record is set as hundreds of thousands of people cross the border. Drug trafficking, human trafficking, and sex trafficking have ravaged communities across this nation.

Per the constitution, Congress is tasked with oversight of federal government agencies and to ensure that they are working for citizens. However, the Department of Homeland Security continues to stonewall the release of crucial documents related to the border crisis. As a member of the House Judiciary Committee, I am committed to ensuring government transparency, which is why I joined my colleagues Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan and Representative McClintock in sending a letter to Attorney General Garland and Secretary Mayorkas expressing our concerns with the agencies lack of transparency. While accountability for the broken border ultimately rests with the President, I believe we must act to remove Secretary Mayorkas for violating his oath of office and encouraging the chaos we are seeing at the border right now.
