Several months ago, Congress provided funding to help renters get through the pandemic. Many Oregonians are still trying to access the assistance, which is also available to landlords. Please spread the word: just by applying for assistance, Oregon renters are protected from eviction for an additional 60 days, and in Multnomah county it’s an additional 90 days. Renters and property owners can check eligibility here or call 211 for more information. I am grateful that the CDC just extended the eviction moratorium until October because too many people are still waiting for relief to be delivered, and COVID-19 cases are rising.

Thank you to everyone who joined me for my recent telephone town hall meeting. Sign up for the next one on Tuesday, September 14 at 6 pm (and please note this is a date change from past announcements).

Funding for NW Oregon

ImageRecently the House passed funding for nine of the community projects I requested to help the people of Northwest Oregon. The projects I chose include cardiac monitors, a health clinic expansion, and a small business center that will support our economic recovery and advance equity in our communities. The bill now goes to the Senate, and I am hopeful that they pass this important appropriations package.

Welcoming a New Secretary of Education

Image

One of my favorite moments from Secretary Cardona's visit to Oregon was when a student ran up to greet us at the Hillsboro bilingual summer program. The Secretary of Education introduced himself, saying "I'm Miguel Cardona” and the student said “I’m Miguel too!” It was one of many reminders during his visit that representation is powerful.

I'm one of the few Members of Congress who attended community college. It was wonderful to speak with Oregon community college students and leaders about how they're overcoming challenges and opening doors of opportunity. Students told Secretary Cardona and me how their education is making a tremendous difference in their lives. With their stories in mind, I’ll keep working for the American Families Plan, which would help millions of students access two years of tuition-free community college.

Delivering Meals on Wheels

ImageDelivering meals to seniors with Meals on Wheels is always a meaningful experience! Thanks to Fred and Sue for including me on your volunteer route, and to all the wonderful people who volunteer to keep this program going. It’s about so much more than nutrition. Volunteers provide companionship, social connection, and safety checks. I'm glad I could secure an additional $18 million for Oregon seniors this year.
